It was a sturdy ruggedised outer that looked like a power feeder,
containing 12 fibres that were not visible as separate fibres except at the
ends. I did not see the operation, but they had to cut through the complete
cable and heat weld the individual fibres using specialist equipment.
Apparently it was supposed to give a better result than an epoxy join.
