pico isn't Free enough for Debian, so it's actually a symlink to nano. nano
can be invoked with "nano -w", or alternatively put "set nowrap" in your
.nanorc to fix this broken data-corrupting behaviour. That it's not the
default is unforgivable though, and shows its origins as a horrid clone of a
toy editor embedded in a sub-par MUA.

As a bonus, you can configure it to mangle your files in different ways dependi
ng on how wide your
screen is. So you can create text that still doesn't word-wrap correctly on a t
ypical eighty-column
terminal.
