You are aiming for a minimal system - which is great.
As others have said, why install Gnome when all you seem to need is
the baobab package?
Could you not get the same functionality using a set of scripts, or
this very useful utility, from the author of Putty:

I gave it a whirl the other day, and it looks very nifty.
