Er... No. Just five days after installing Windows 7, boot times had
doubled and (particularly) file copying had got ridiculously slow. I
wanted to give this latest iteration a fair chance, but the owner of the
machine has said that she doesn't have time to waste waiting for Windoze
to complete trivial tasks.

She deleted the Windows brokenware off it and installed the latest Open
Suse. She spent fifteen minutes adding software she wanted, and running
the automated updates, and then the machine was up and flying.

Having tried Windows 7 on three different machines, I've found that it's
just a shinier version of the last version with a "service pack" added.
It still has all the inherent Windows problems: it breaks compatibility
with older software, falls over at the slightest provocation, is really
expensive, and has no effective security model.

C.
