A bit of further investigation reveals there are special USB "data
transfer cables" available that let you connect two USB hosts
together:

I wonder how they work?  Presumably they must have some bit of
hardware in the middle that looks like a slave to both ends and
probably does a fair bit of translation work.

Note that some the cables I found come with _Windows_ drivers, and
some claimed not to need drivers at all (unclear if that refers just
to one end or to both ends).  You should check this issue out before
purchasing though.
