Solved (just in time for the firewall's 100Mb/s network card to die:
it's now connected to the local net by a 10Mb/s card, which knocked me
off the net because that's the card that *was* talking to the ADSL
router).

One null-modem cable is right. Two really don't work, for hopefully
obvious reasons. (I thought one of them was a normal cable, but, no.)

So I'm now connected to the net via a Soekris. Lovely little machines.
