This was the attitude of a friend of mine, who then had difficulty in
getting on to a course, not because he was "underqualified" but the
opposite. He'd got a degree in maaths in 1971 or 1972 and had goen in
to IT, spending most of his time contracting on IBM mainframes. Some
time in the mid-1990s or so he decided he wanted to have an
intellectual challenge, and thought that studying for membership of the
BCS was the thing to do. So he applied and was told "with your
experience you don't have to sit the exams", and was awarded membership
with no further ado. Which, in his eyes, was not what he wanted.

Fortunately, he has now got a fulltime job with IBM, who are sponsoring
him to do an MSc at Oxford. I don't know if it's helping his career,
but he's really enjoying it,
