In which case a tough degree from a good university is to be
recommended.  A multi-disciplinary one combining, for example, an
in-depth study of a language, plus analytical or critical skills would
be excellent.  I don't doubt the benfit of specialist training, but
some of the best programmers and engineers I've worked with have
degree in, for example, Music, Oriental Studies, or Classics.  A
person who has learned how to learn can very quickly pick up the
additional technical knowledge and understanding that is required.
