Actually, yes they are the same language, at least in written form.
There are colloquialisms that are unique to one or the other, but for
the most part, the two are the same. They are pronounced completely
differently, so a speaker of one can't understand what someone speaking
the other is saying. But they can communicate with each other through
writing, which they both understand.
