Have you considered putting Linux on it?  My parents had similar
issues until I installed Ubuntu on their machine; as they mostly use
it for web-browsing, photos and occasional word processing they have
been fine.

Additionally, they haven't been plagued with malware since and I have
had far fewer panicked phone calls! :)
