With USB booting sometimes you have to power off the system before it
recognises a USB device (OK, that was only for some old mini-ITX
boards I have).

Have you  tried pressing ESC or somesuch when it is booting - again on
my eeePC you have to do that to select the boot device, even though
you set the boot order in the BIOS.
