The ATI drivers are for modern ATI cards substantially *worse* than the
free ones. e.g. my brand-new-last-year ATI card has no support at all...
and the ATI driver is *dog* slow, slower than Radeon KMS is now even
though Radeon KMS doesn't even support interrupts yet. And fglrx leaks
memory like a sieve.

fglrx is crap, crap code. Even its authors think so. Literally code not
even its mother could love.

That card's only new-ish, actually. Two years old and rv670: it's an
r600, not an r700, let alone the recently-released r800.
