PCIe looks just like PCI to software, so there is support. (Even things
like ASPM are becoming supported, although so far very few drivers take
advantage of it, and no video drivers.)

Well, my Radeon HD4870 bought last year works excellently for my fairly
simple purposes. Kernel modesetting works; 3D works modulo drawing
errors on nasty high-end stuff like Penumbra; things like scorched3d and
compositing window managers work fine, and thanks to KMS I can get 3D
*and* composition at the same time. And it's only getting better: IRQ
and power management support are in the radeon-drm-testing tree now, and
shader support is coming (a good bit of work to do on the gallium driver
for Radeons in Mesa first though, so later this year sometime).

Avoid nvidia unless you like the left-out-in-the-cold can't-upgrade-
kernel-even-for-security-holes feeling you get when your card is a few
years old and they drop support for it.

I *like* my Radeon. :)
