Chris,
  One thing that no one has mentioned yet is the possibility of sending the
drive off to a recovery firm.  It is not cheap, but if the data is important
enough it is worth it.  I have used Drive Savers [

0-800-89-0011.  I am NOT affiliated with them in any way, however, they did
save my butt about 11 years ago with a customer's HD.
