Thanks for the advice Richard.

I am doing my darndest to adhere to the MVC model so a web based GUI is
entirely possible in the future. However, as this machine is solely for
backing up other machines which I have to be there to physically connect
I can't really see a remote use case.

Having programmed both GUI and Web apps in the past I have to say I
would find it faster to create the interface I want (and the interface
would be faster) with a GUI toolkit rather than an Web/AJAX one. Also,
if written properly a GUI app/view could run over a LAN almost as easily
as it could locally.

One good reason I want a desktop running on this box is so I don't have
to have a second box cluttering up my workshop and burning electricity
solely in order to control the first. Whether I opt for a web based
interface or a more traditional GUI that remains the case.

What I am looking for is a fairly clean, light desktop. I have to admit
after trying the latest Ubuntu today I'm going off the idea of using
Ubuntu altogether. The button switch doesn't bother me nearly as much as
them getting rid of the really useful "Check CD for defects" and "Test
Memory" boot options in an attempt to make it look a bit more minimalist
and, dare I say, Mac like. That and the clumsy new undergraduate level
graphics, poor show!

Cheers,

Roger.
