A big thank you to Ciarán and John for organising last nights talk. To
anyone that missed it, you missed out.

The most notable part of the presentation was definitely the Octopus!

If anyone wants to know the difference between a 2048 core supercomputer (
yesterdays <http://www.sgi.com/products/servers/altix/uv/specs.html>) and a
mainframe? I did a quick Google search and found these
Wikipedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainframe_computer#Differences_from_supercomputers>&
this wiki
answers<http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_a_supercomputer_and_a_mainframe>.
Main difference is mainframe = large number of simple tasks needing lots of
I/O. Supercomputer = large complex single task needing lots of memory.

The Altix UltraViolet computer that was covered has now been added to my
wishlist for my 30th birthday if anyone is interested. Perhaps you could
all club together. Perhaps you could also buy me a new home to fit it into.

The Altix UltaViolet is currently in 6th, 24th, 26th, 28th, 37th, 39th,
40th, 41th, 72nd & 75th place, in the top 100 of the top 500 supercomputers
in the world. 3 of those are NASA systems. 6th place has a core count of
56,320. Eng yesterday said there's had the most core's in the world at
currently 4096. What's up with that. Perhaps they merge 13 and a bit
systems into a cluster.
