Surely they must have some form of power backup.  I'd imagine batteries and
a diesel generator to top the batteries up.  Otherwise in a power cut your
phones wouldn't work as they actually do.  Or so I thought anyway.  That's
why it's always good to have a non wireless phone (mains powered base
station) at home, just in case of a power cut.
