The new Core I3 will run 32bit or 64bit Ubuntu without any problems.
I would recommend 64bit Ubuntu.
Regarding the old machine.
Did you used to have a Ubuntu box booting fine, and the one day it
started asking for a HDD password?
If you do not have the password, there is an override procedure, but
the override essentially wipes the HD.
Another alternative is to purchase a new HDD for about £50 and use
that with the old one.
