Yup, that was indeed the problem.

This resulted when I manged to remove network, network-manager etc
while trying to move the system to do dependency boots (something
I have to revisit).

Manually adding the default route worked. I expect it to pick it up
again next time I reboot. Unless some suggests otherwise?
