OK, I finally figured it out...

I was doing ps aux | grep iptables to see if iptables was running, and
since I saw nothing I assumed it was off.

Apparently now iptables runs a kernel module [when did that happen ?!], so
the correct way is lsmod | grep iptables.


Now I put the machine in the dmz and I am happily setting up iptables
rules again :-)
