Indeed - I used to teach technical theatre - the round pin plugs would be used 
on dimmed circuits which should only carry resistive loads which can cope with 
significant current and voltage variation (bascally filament lamps only). Very 
interesting things would happen if electronics or motors got plugged the wrong 
socket!
