Yep,  one always needs to be aware of disk caches  - hence we run the system
on a UPS.
I presume the system forces the disks to flush their caches to the platters
when it does a halt though !!


regarding block sizes, my expereince in dd-ing to character devices is that
one only needs to ensure the the writes are an ineger multiple of 512
