Where I in London there is a street which is below the high tide level
of the Thames.
The local pub has a brass marker on the bar at the level of the 1928 flood.

Talking about flooding, use Google Earth or Maps and have a look at
the Thames flood barrier.
Have a good look at Barrier Park, on the north bank just upstream of
the barrier,
and note that concrete trench running diagonally from the river.
