Mine came from a name that people used to use to insult me at school. (I
don't know why they thought it was insulting.)

I made it my own, but it never felt right to change it legally: Nix is
an online persona only (plus, after being attacked mercilessly for my
surname throughout my teenage years I feel I have to carry it arond as a
sort of nominal scar).

You are (as you no doubt know) not by any means the only person on the
net to have changed his name to a single unusual word (indeed one of the
others I'm thinking of has chosen a bicapitalized neologism).
