Update. I just fired up Evolution 2.28.2 for a test.
It took around ten minutes to update my inbox - slow as treacle.

Actually, I just learned something. I was going to complain that it
woud not delete an email.
Turns out the big red cross icon is 'terminate the current operation'
not 'delete this email' -
which is the rubbish bin icon.
