Vapour phase CO2 refrigeration is nothing new and is in wide use across the
refrigeration industry, as is use of ammonia.

There is a legislation led drive away from CFCs towards use of CO2 in
industrial cooling, due to concern over the effects of the former on the
ozone layer. However, if you speak to an industrial design engineer they can
give you a number of reasons why this is pretty shortsighted.
