If you want to have something that gives the fast searching, tagging and
threading somewhat like gmail, but on a local machine, notmuch mail is
definitely worth a look, but is certainly not a "pay someone else to do
the hard work" solution, because it's more intended to be a tool for
building a solution for yourself:

As you can see by looking at the mailing list, it's undergoing pretty
active development, but it is entirely usable as is (at least, when
plugged into emacs it is, and I've heard success stories from people
using it from vim and mutt as well -- yes, that's right, there are
people using vim as their MUA ;-)
