You're going to have to risk upsetting your wife, unfortunately.  You
could do the upgrade yourself, but you'd void any warranty and your
network provider would get thoroughly confused.  

Take it back to the shop and explain that not only is it unfit for
purpose, but that they're guilty of deliberately misleading their
customer.  

They'll bluster and whinge (because they stand to lose a juicy bonus for
stitching up yet another M$ customer), but if you suggest that Trading
Standards have already shown interest in your problem, and that you
really wanted a Samsung Galaxy S2 and that was what your wife had
actually asked for, you'll probably be given one just to shut you up!

Phones for You and Carphone Warehouse are getting large numbers of these
Winphone efforts returned because they "don't work properly".  They are
also finding that they can't "upsell" to Apple, either, because the
iPhones can't do Flash and don't do data in marginal signal areas.
