It's a long way inside the belts. I'm typing this on two Debian machines
separated by more than twenty times as much distance as the distance
between the ISS and the ground, and the belts extend much further out
than that.

The ISS is just barely out of the upper atmosphere (by some definitions
it's not out at all). The magnetosphere shrouds it as it does us...
