I think that's too broad.
With the paper news sector, as opposed to journalists, it's worth
distinguishing between nationals and locals. Nationals are suffering
you're right: I personally know of a telegraph journo who took a 60% pay
cut just to keep his job, and a guardian journo who was paid <£1000 for
about eight months research because (I understand) they are paid per
word of the final article.
/Locals/ on the other hand are actually doing quite well [1], to the
extent I know people who have gone to the US to be a journalist for them.
