Although GitHub's entire business model has been to provide
value-add features like issues, comments on pull requests, wikis,
web hosting, gists, etc etc. All of which are proprietary and most of
which don't live inside your git repository, so your only access to
them is through their API.

Thankfully it is still possible to back up most of this stuff so at
least the raw information will remain should the service go awry. I
use this:
