Hello everybody,
I turned up to your lug meeting for the first time the other night and
being new to linux, found it very interesting. Thanks to everyone who
helped me out with my newbie questions.
Here's another question I hope you can help me with:
My first attempt with linux was using redhat 7.3 which went ok and I got
most things to work(including the modem). The only problem was it seemed
a little slow on my PC (533 mhz cpu + 192 mb memory). Also surfing the
web was painfully slow(56k modem), Windows 2000 feels like broadband
after using redhat.
I decided to give another distro a go and opted for Mandrake 9. This
runs much faster than redhat did and was very easy to configure. The
only problem is i can't get the modem to work. I have downloded the
correct rpm from this site
(http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hcf/downloads.html) but Mandrake still
can't find my modem. My modem is a: "Conexant HCF 56K PCI Modem"
I am told it is succesfully installed and that I should find my modem
at: /dev/ttyshcf0. In kppp this does not show up. Is there a way to
correct this?
Also can anybody reccommend a good modem to use with linux? I may buy
another modem. This may be the only option.
Thanks again
Jason
