Extfrnal modems are better if you have a WinModem that uses the CPU to do
work.  If you are using Mandrake it is unlikly that you have a WinModem (the
drivers aren't usually availible for Linux) so switching to an external modem
won't speed anything up.

So, unless you are sure you have a WinModem I wouldn't bother getting an
external.
