I was looking at this. As I understand it at the moment you can do
everything an NT4.0 box can do with Samba 3.0, plus a bit. From what I
could work out, you can replace member servers in an AD domain with
Samba 3.0 but you can't completely replace an AD server setup at the
moment as you have to keep one Windows server :-( . If you find a
different way of doing things or if that's wrong then I'm all ears as
this was something I really wanted to do. (hence my interest in
LDAP/samba).

I know you can do squid web access control using samba and ldap too.
They're (the suits) quite rightly nervous about what users are able to download/use on the
computers, so I'm interested in joining the samba/ldap users/groups to the web
cache permissions. (e.g. ban all mp3 downloads unless it's a authenticated
member of staff,then log that download). I was going to look at squidguard
for that.
