It may be ignorance on my part but I think that Gnome will not have been 
installed if you chose default settings. First you will have to install using 
SuSE Work menu button - administration - install software packages - system - 
file system tools. I havent tried it but you will need to use root paasword 
during install. 
I guess that once installed the start application button will lead to GNOME.

Please report back how you get on since I have SuSE 8.2 and could benefit.
