Unless there's somebody around who knows about this specific Gnome
problem, I think Paul is on the best track here. We should see what is
running while you have to wait. I imagine that running top in an xterm
might not be very useful, since that would be closed while shutting
down.

Maybe we could try running it in another virtual tty:

* Hit <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <F2> to switch to the second virtual tty

* login to the prompt that will appear (I hope...)

* run "top"

* Hit <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <F7> to get back to your Gnome/X session (if it's
	not there - try different function keys)

* Try shutting down Gnome as usual

* Quickly hit <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <F2> to get back to top

* Take notice of anything near the top the display, particularly anything
	using a large %CPU or %MEM that disappears once Gnome has exited

* Let us know about anything you notice!

Apologies if this is all obvious and you've tried it, but it wasn't
clear that you'd checked this from your reply to Paul.
