Last night I installed 2.6.2 on my Debian laptop.  After the reboot everything
appeared to work except the mouse; thanks to your advice I CRTL+ALT+1
switched to another terminal and installed the psmouse driver and all
was well.  To me, things appear much faster.  Startup and shutdown are
quicker (I'll have to time things to quantify).  General desktop use
appears quicker too; starting GNOME and applications is faster and I had
to decelerate my mouse movement.  It may all be my imagination
though...

I hear that fedora core 2 is now available and uses 2.6, I'll have to
give that a go too.
