Nightmare. Reinstalling was probably best as you'd be doing basically
that if you used 'testing/unstable' stuff anyway.
I had my PC lockup once just when dkpg was doing something and I think
only now, many months on is the dpkg DB about 90% right again. Worst of
all it lost libc6 but I had enough to get by on as I still had the
actual files just dpkg didn't know I had. :)
As for backups. Been on my list of 'things to do' for years now ;)
