Well, I checked this already: /usr/bin is before /usr/bin/X11 in $PATH.
If they were in the other order would it make a difference? After
all, /usr/bin/X11/gv doesn't exist, so bash should keep looking,
shouldn't it?

:-) Again, strace output makes no mention of /usr/bin/X11 and
immediately starts working with /usr/bin/gv - and I can't get an strace
of the not-working case for comparison...
