Hi, thanks for your replies. I have got a Toshiba Satellite 1110 lap top
and am running Fedora Core 3. I am not sure if Fedora would be
considered as multi media oriented or not.

Thanks Christian for suggesting I might drop round with the lap top and
you have a look at it. I would really like to take you up on that at
some point especially if I am headed that way (I live the other side of
Swindon from Glos so it is a bit of a trek). Will get in touch over
that.

So much of the system is going well that I am quite reluctant to change
the distro. This is also partly because I did try Ubuntu at one stage
and (I am sure it was me not Ubuntu) but I found it really
disappointing: I couldn't seem to download and install applications and
had loads of other problems. So I am keen to stay with Fedora at the
moment and try and work on the problems which I have got with it.

With regard to the sound card I imagine that because I can play CDs and
listen to radio on line that there is no problem with that and it is
just the microphone input or something. The microphone did work with
Skype on the same computer.

Fortunately none of the glitches I have got is stopping me do anything
vital but I feel I need to get to a source(s) of information to help me
with general maintainance and improvements to my computer.

I will check out the links you sent.

Best wishes from Steve
