I can understand, if you stick to the current distri you have installed.
On the other hand, I did the same with SuSe 8.1 did a lot workarounds
and found out later when trying another distro that I should have
changed earlier. A lot of the modern distros come in a well balanced
package, so it is sometimes easier to make a change to get rid of some
nasty problems with one step. However, you can use a LiveCD like Mepis
to check your system without touching your current system. Probably, you
find your microfone working when running the LiveCD and perhaps you can
find out what's wrong with your Fedora at this point.
Another try would be to look for an update for your recording software.
Does Fedora uses the KPackage as installer tool? If yes, it is easy to
upgrade.
