Hello Glynd,

give MEPIS a try. The ISO can be found
ftp://ftp.cise.ufl.edu/pub/mirrors/mepis/released/SimplyMEPIS_3.4-3.iso
and burn it on a CD. MEPIS runs as LiveCD, so you can check your laptop
first and has a graphical installer, if you want install it.
