Morning Ian

Ok Small home server, easey to use, loads of add ons etc. My solution would me
SME 7, I have this installed on at least 20 cusomers sites as well as one in our
office and one at home. If you want to setup a domain for your windoz computers
you can (Just remember to edit the registry on XP computers befor joining the
domain). You can download the ISO image and burn that to CD, if however you are
unable to do this I can burn you a copy and drop it round as I'm based in
central Gloucester. Nearly forgot, setting up starts with text but as soon as
you have set the server type, IP addresses, domain name and password the system
will reboot and you just use a web browser.

File server
Mail server (Including Webmail)
FTP server
Firewall
PHP
Anti Spam (Spam Assasin)
Web proxy (Squid)
Email proxy (Stops infected computers from directly sending viruses and spam via
smtp)
MySQL....
The list goes on

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=smeserver

The following site contains loads of add ons for the basic server
http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/

Best of luck

; Hi there people, I have been lurking on the list for about 12 months
; now and I've finally got to the stage where i have something to post /
; ask, now please bear with me as i will be using rude words like
; "windows" in this message.
;
; basically, this is the story ....
;
; i'm now in a position to add a server to my home network, my main pc
; runs windows but also has apache & php installed to help with my
; web-development.
;
; what i'm looking to do is add a Linux-based server into my existing
; network, it must have apache, mysql & php installed and also an ftp
; server would be nice. It will also be used as a printer server where
; the other 2 pc's on the network send documents to it for printing.
;
; I also would like to add a 300gb usb hard-drive to it to use as a media
; store and allow my pc and my wifes pc to access it to retrieve music &
; video clips etc.
;
; i have looked around and found a few distro that may do what i want,
; however i would also prefer a GUI if possible.
;
; so to recap here's my goal :-
;
;     * Linux based server.
; * running apache, php, mysql & ftp server.
;     * graphical interface.
; * support external usb drive.
;     * allow printing via a brother mfc-210 printer/fax.
;
; you'll have to forgive me if I've not explained this to well, but i'm
; pretty confident that with the knowledge available on this list, i can
; achieve my goal and in time i can move from wife from windows to ubuntu
; or some other nice distro (she's already using firefox, thunderbird and
; openoffice).
;
; so please can you give me some pointers, if anyone lives near
; shurdington and could pop round, i can supply coffee, beer or anything
; required.
;
; many thanks
;
; Ian
