Make sure you get an RJ11->BT adaptor with a "ring capacitor", otherwise
the ATA will not generate a ring tone. Alternatively if you already have
a spare stock of ADSL filters, these already have ring capacitors and
will do the same job.
I'm looking at getting an ATA myself. Currently I am considering the
Linksys SPA3102 as this has both an FXO and FXS port.

The traditional phones are plugged into the FXS port, and the FXO port
is plugged into the BT socket. This way, the household phones can:
* Receive calls on the normal BT number 01242whatever
* Make 999/112, freephone, operator and other calls of my choice /
configuration on the normal BT line.
* Make all other calls (national, international, my choice /
configuration) via SIP/VOIP
Particularly useful is the way that, when the power dies, the Linksys
SPA3102 automatically connects the FXS port straight through to the FXO
port, thereby allowing 999 and other calls to be made and received on
the normal BT line during a power cut.
I *think*. I'm going to buy one after Christmas and have a play. All
inspired by Chris' talk at GLUG, of course.
