Lenovo Thinkpad or second hand IBM. That's it - you won't need anything 
else.

[Almost any laptop can be made to run Linux, with varying success - but
some may always have "stuff" that doesn't work. Sony Vaio have, I think,
a proprietary media card reader - that sort of thing.]
