Paul,

Just thought I'd mention something that I believe works well with
Windows machines at each end. Have a look at https://secure.logmein.com.
Not sure if they have Linux versions.

The idea is quite simple. When you want to gain remote access you have
to know the other end's IP (typically dynamic) and the other end has to
allow your remote access request through its firewall/NAT. logmein gets
around this by using a server on the Internet for you to meet up at e.g.
Your Father runs logmein (which talks to the server), you run logmein
which also talks to the same server and the remote desktop session is
initiated. Not sure if all traffic goes via the server or just the
session setup.

Pros: No firewall stuff to setup. No dynamic IP to find. Simple for your
father to run. Never have an open port on your firewall for someone to
hack at. Encrypted (so they say).

Cons: All goes via Logmein's server which is closed source so no idea
how really secure it is.

They do have some part that runs with linux

They even have an image to show just how much fun solving your problem
can be with their software
