There are no fewer than 206 Scottish dances listed on the Strathspey server with "rant" in their names, everything from "Allison's Rant" through "Menzie's Rant" to the "The Zozzled Rant". There's even a "The Maxwell's Rant Again". Evidently a popular pastime. No Andy's rant on the list yet though! That said, there was a chap who did the one man version of the highland sword dance whilst playing his own music on the fiddle at the Summer School in St Andrews this year and I think his name was Andy. We might have a candidate for the slot.
I'd avoid packages for the Adobe code. Installation really is just a matter of copying a single .so file into ~/.mozilla/plugins/ . In this instance packages just add extra complexity and can get things wrong. That is assuming that your son will use Iceweasel or Firefox, not Opera or Midori or whatever else.
For codecs you might want to add this to your sources list on a debian system; I forget the equivalent for ubuntu. The systems you do this on will however end up decidedly bad. Install repository keys, apt-get update and look for things with 'bad' and 'ugly' in their names. Not necessary for bbc though, I think.

We could have a squabble about the best video player. Mplayer - powerful but hard to use - Totem - effete - VLC - golden mean. ;-)
Have fun,
