Actually I noticed earlier they appear to be user-agent sniffing. If
your user-agent happens to something non-Firefox, Chromium, etc
related you get a plain Google page.

(Or just setting general.useragent.extra.firefox in about:config to
something like Firefox/2.0.1 seems to do it.)
