Of those two, KVM will probably be the easiest to experiment with. Xen has
a separate hypervisor and requires a modified kernel in the guest OS.
As for storage, you can use pretty much any local file or block device and
present it as a storage device to a VM, so yes you could use a USB stick,
either as a raw device or place a VM image as a file on it. I/O Performance
will probably suck though.
