Not reading HTML mail (at least by default) will avoid just about all
email advertising. I use claws-mail.
For the web, I use Google Chrome with the AdBlock extension.
I do know what you mean, though. I recently stayed at my sister in law's
flat, and used her Windows PC to sort out a couple of things. I found web
browsing seriously compromised by the amount of advertising crap shown. I
don't know why companies are so ignorant about advertising to a
contemporary audience, but clearly many companies are.
